Rap and Punk

Introduction

Dear reader and musician,

In this blog I will be writing about Punk and Rap. Both of these styles originated around the same time, but appealed to different audiences. Mostly, they were all youths of the 1970s, who rebelled against society and norms. I think it is interesting to look at youth culture of that time, as it really inspired the youth culture of today.

Punk History

In the mid-1970s, the new New York sound and style came into focus through the Ramones (who created a uniform of shredded Levi’s 505 jeans and black leather jacketswhose guitarist  was one of the first performers to rock spiked hair and torn T-shirts held together by safety pins), and  (fronted by , who pioneered high-low mixes of Levi’s and designer pieces), and other groups that orbited divey clubs like CBGB. “They had no money,” photographer Jenny Lens recalls. “The holes in Joey’s knees were from wear and tear. They were not fashion. I have photos of  wearing a leather jacket, and around the wrists it’s really frayed. It was shameful back then to run around with holes in your jeans, and the Ramones said that, that’s who we are

Forty years after punk started, the music continues to reverberate, not only in the punk scenes that have popped up in cities and small towns around the world, but in the indie and alternative movements that punk inspired. In fashion, its influence has spread even further. You can see some in the indie rock uniform of jeans and T-shirts, and the continuing influence of McLaren and Westwood’s vision in the complexly customized jackets that have become de rigueur for rap stars. Punk style’s most enduring legacy can’t be boiled down to a particular item of clothing, or even the popularity of distressed jeans and dyed hair. It’s more about the idea of being authentic, that if you do your own thing and dress your own way, you can make the world change around you. “We would take what we would see in fashion and make it our own, where other people would take what’s in fashion and just run  Punk rap is a style of hip hop that is influenced by the rebellious ethos of punk rock. Punk rap is very commonly conflated with New York magazine described its origins as “the product of a convergence between Atlanta trap and the devilish eclecticism of Miami predecessors like.rappers are  skilled at improvising lyrics and they must keep up with the beat. rap s a delivery style that includes rhyme rhythm and spoken language usually  explicit and delivered over a beat a prerecorded track composed of electronic the song is called hope tul it is all about anti bullying it is a song combined with rap the rap song usually uses pre recorded.

The ’77 punk explosion contributed to the punk musical style, with the Sex Pistols in England and the Ramones in the US arguably the most important bands. Both bands featured a standard rock ensemble of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. The guitar was heavily distorted, and for the most part the guitarist played power chords—root, fifth, and octave without any third to delineate major or minor harmony or any additional chord tone. One of punk rock’s most notable characteristics is its short song lengths, many spanning just under two minutes while still retaining a verse-chorus structure. In punk, distorted power chords play more of a timbral and melodic than a harmonic role, offering a full, powerful, and abrasive sound. Punk lyrics are shouted and it is very anti-establishment.Sex Pistols’ vocalist Johnny Rotten’s snarl has become representative of the attitude infused vocal approach of ’77-style punk. While this amateurism and the low bar for participation are central to punk, so performing punk nevertheless required little or no musical training to get right. The tempo of typical punk could reach anything between 300 and 400 BPM, with some hardcore songs reaching above 400 BPM.  second approach to the blast beat is to play the kick and snare drum at the same time along with a cymbal to create a continuous pulse stream with all drums sounding simultaneously rather than alternating. nk riffs were played with distortion on the guitars, which does create a kind of harmonic dissonance by bringing out multiple overtones that clash with the pitches of the power chord. Punk riffs almost always used power chords, which consist of a root and pitches a perfect fifth and an octave above that root.

Rap is a style of hip hop that is influenced by the rebellious ethos of punk rock. Punk rap-is very commonly conflated with “SoundCloud rap New York magazine described its origins as “the product of a convergence between Atlanta trap and the devilish eclecticism of Miami predecessors like SpaceGhostPurrpomeone native to SoundCloud, lil aaron has experienced a textbook industry emergence. He’s worked as a songwriter for pop stars like  and Icona Pop, while keeping it underground with  and Ro  And like any behind the scenes phenom, his star couldn’t be contained. You may have heard him on Y2K’s minor hit, “DAMN”, where lil aaron showcased a grimier version of alt. rock’s infamous vocal fry. If you like smeared, stretched out singing and trap snares, check out his mixtape BOYFRIENDZ. It’s labeled under “Alternative Rock” on SoundCloud.

Not all punk looks like punk. When I first heard Kevin Abstract’s single not only did I not recognize him as the guy from BROCKHAMPTON, I also thought I was dealing with a textbook em rapper. That impression got proved wrong a couple minutes into the song, where the guitar chords and Blinkesque drum beat dwindle to emptiness before Kevin’s voice surges back in, an instrument in itself. Anyone familiar with his discography knows that Kevin’s punk is elusive and fluid, that it comes in flashes as he shape shifts across songs.

Punk music doesn’t go away. I used to think of it in rigid terms, as something loud and angsty that emerged in the 1970s before slipping into the vague identifier “alt rock,” and finally tapering off into generality. But bands like Ramones are amazing and have some profound lyrics.

That chronology is kind of right, but it didn’t taper— it bloomed. Punk is an aesthetic of attitude, and even into the late 1990s many of the bands being called alt still saw themselves as punk. By the time I was in middle school, the big “punk” acts were people like Paramore and Fall Out Boy, now working under the “emo pop” and “pop punk” labels. Ten years later, I wonder how many middle-school emo fans could have predicted a resurgence of that genre coming from rap musicians.

Hip-hop has become pop music’s alchemy. Any style is fair game to be sampled, chopped, warped, mixed, and spat back out with newfound urgency and intimacy. One style that is quietly undergoing this process is punk music (in a broad definition of the word. It is interesting that both are so similar, but they relate to different youths.

Rock has a long production history in hip-hop, but only recently have the sonics been so thoroughly incorporated into vocals and lyrical content.s mega-hit TOUR is angsty and melodic enough that it could be thrown over drums and power chords and nothing would seem out of place. It’s no surprise that Uzi cites Hayley Williams, lead singer of Paramore a kind of street art especially among African American teenagers but it wasn’t until 1979 when the Sugarthill gang released their breakaway hit “rappers delight”.

Punk and Rap are both so different, but so the same. If you want to find out, come to the Diversified Festival this Summer at Wembley Arena! Both styles are youthful, but both that originated in the 70s. Today’s youth have yet to discover the amazing talents of these genres. We look forward to seeing you!
